Flash Messaging

Truecaller, earlier this year, brought the ability for you to transmit quick bits of messages such as emojis to your friends. Titled “Flash Messaging”, it never really took off as the majority of users either never get past the app’s caller ID tools or couldn’t figure out any prime use cases for it. Therefore, if you belong to any of these groups, I would recommend turning off the feature entirely. For disabling it on iOS, head into the ‘More’ tab, then ‘General’ and in there, switch off ‘Flash’. On Android, it’s under the Privacy section of the app’s settings.

Truecaller now also shows you whether the other person is, at any particular moment, available or on a call or has put the ringer on silent mode. Since the feature continuously checks for each of your contact’s status, disabling it can dramatically alleviate the app’s performance. At least for me, it did. Follow the same steps on both iOS and Android and you’ll find a switch for ‘Availability’.

After Call Details

Truecaller’s Android app, apart from throwing a pop-up every time you receive a call from an unknown number, also shows an additional notification after you end the call. In most cases, this floating alert is both redundant and a serious memory hogger especially if you have a budget or underpowered smartphone. Thankfully, you can easily get rid of it from the app’s settings. It’s situated inside the ‘Caller ID’ section.

Remind Me of Missed Calls

Another unnecessary Truecaller feature you should turn off immediately is something called “Remind Me of Missed Calls”. It essentially sends you notifications every hour nudging you to call the person back. It probably won’t have any significant impact on the app’s performance but hey, who doesn’t like lesser notifications?! This is an Android-only utility as well and is present in the General section.

Truecaller also searches for unfamiliar numbers whenever you copy them or receive a message from someone who’s not on in your contact list on apps like WhatsApp and Telegram. While it is one of the niftiest features the app offers, you’re better off without them if your phone is struggling to keep up as it adds two extra background Truecaller activities. The setting is available in the General category of the app on Android. Those were some of the most critical features you should disable if the Truecaller app is bogging down your phone. As a last resort, you can also turn off the live caller ID and search the number manually. Let us know in the comments section if we missed anything.
