Treat this as a mere speculation. A new group of hackers called gull1b0ard claim to have found an exploit which will jailbreak iPhone 3GS with new bootrom and it will be untethered. The exploit appears to work not only in iPhone 3GS models with new bootrom, but also in all iPhone and iPod touch models. This is where I find the claim a bit fake. The group has come from nowhere, absolute strangers to the jailbreaking world. But if it isn’t, it’s just what so many of us are waiting for!
